We are working with a packaging solutions provider that specialises in servicing the healthcare industry. Their focus is to bring best-in-class innovation, design and manufacturing solutions to its customers across the world. Subsequent to continuous expansion, they are looking to grow their production team through the appointment of a senior packaging specialist. This role will provide the organisation with technical skill-sets in order to enable product and process flow. The Specialist offers proactive problem solving skills and facilitates business processes where packaging material and process knowledge and expertise are required, including – but not limited to – packaging material and process validation, detailed material and process knowledge and project support.

Key responsibilities include the following:

• Packaging Validation and Verification

o Creation and delivery of appropriate Protocols and Reports.

o Identify and rationalise appropriate testing techniques.

o Deliver proactive Packaging Engineering support across the business.

o Provide Packaging SME regulatory guidance to ensure compliance to all appropriate standards.

o Maintenance of electronic and paper records relating to the above.

• Printer hardware and process validation/verification

o Validation and testing all on line printer installations and process/material changes.

o Validation and testing of new materials and inks through our client’s flexographic printer.

o Performing testing in line with relevant protocols and maintaining records as required.

• Capital Expenditure projects

o Deliver Packaging SME guidance on packaging processes and equipment across the business.

o Deliver Packaging SME input into URS and FDS documentation.

o Deliver Packaging FAT documentation and support during FAT and SAT activities.

• Packaging Regulatory Compliance

o Deliver regulatory advice and guidance on compliance to EU Waste Directive 94/62/EC.

o Coordination and approval of annual packaging waste reporting and submission.

• EPD / NPD

o Packaging design, development and validation of packaging solutions.

o Deliver Packaging Engineering SME guidance to R&D team, on primary packaging design and material selection.

o Maintenance of electronic and paper records relating to the above.

• COGS and CI Projects

o Identify, develop and lead packaging COGS projects.

o Identify, develop and lead packaging CI projects that will improve quality, yield and operational efficiencies.

• Manufacturing/Quality support

o Problem solving and error correction to support manufacturing, distribution, value added services and steriliser.

o Develop and conduct required packaging investigations.

o Provide Packaging Engineering SME guidance and support for notified body technical and general audits.

o Deliver Packaging Engineering SME input and guidance on packaging SCN’s across the business.

• Industry knowledge

o Keep abreast of new packaging and material innovations and developments.

o Develop and exploit external networks for new ideas and guidance on packaging processes and testing techniques.

Candidates must have the following technical knowledge and experience:

• Recognised SME in Packaging Engineering.

• Working knowledge of ISO 13485 and BS EN ISO 11607, and associated global standards, and requirements associated with medical device packaging.

• Working knowledge of device sterilisation techniques and systems.

• Microsoft Office skills

 o Intermediate skills in Word, including correct usage of formatting and ‘track    changes’.

 o Intermediate skills in Project, including use of resource planning.

o Intermediate skills in Excel, including the use of formulae and pivot tables to write reports, collect and manipulate data.

• Knowledge and experience of using palletisation evaluation software, eg: CAPE/PCS etc.

• Knowledge of Adobe Suite software and/or CAD desirable.

• Minimum of 5 – 8 years packaging development experience – medical devices packaging preferred, certification is desirable.

• Experience and understanding of processes and materials within the packaging industry.

• Experience and understanding of Packaging validation and verification techniques.

• Experience and understanding of on demand printing techniques.

• Experience and understanding of commercial printing processes, artwork origination and repro.

• Experience with barcoding and GS1 knowledge.
